Dangaizer 3 (1999)

Father daughter time.
Dangaizer 3 (1999)
It is time for we, the Goma, to revive.

Although unfinished worth the watch with beautifully animated mobile suit fight sequences, cute father daughter moments, interesting lore involving awakening identity and ancient systems of power in a mechanized world. The ‘Neo Evolution’ opening track and guitar solo will be stuck in your head forever. The soul gear outfits are high fashion.

Dirty Pair Project Eden (1986)

Hope it was worth it.
Dirty Pair Project Eden (1986)
A pro shouldn't start something they can't finish

Beloved OVA for the ‘dirty pair’ crime fighters. Ah the 80’s in space. Expect over the top fashion, a convoluted plot to take back a stolen bottle of wine, collateral damage, and heroes chasing a dream. Jpop saxophone hits abound!

Dominion Tank Police (1988)

Braap braap pew pew.
Dominion Tank Police (1988)
It's human to risk your life for a person you won't make a deal with?

Masamune Shirow’s jpop masterpiece “Hot dance in cherry moon!” am I right? The tank police are rolling over your grandma to catch the baddies while an experiment gone awry shows what happens when a person with no memory or understanding attempts to meld into society.

El-Hazard (1995)

Just try to shoot through this cat...
El-Hazard (1995)
You don't have to obey anyone anymore!

Stop me if you heard about the one where a high school student is pulled away from their dull life and tossed into a fantasy world where they are all powerful and guests of honor to the ruling class. Oh yeah and the world is still reeling from some super-weapon I’m sure we all know not to try to use again… This 7 part OVA follows our all powerful protagonist teenager across worlds where a struggle between humanity, bugs, and shadowfolk unfolds across glorious fantasy animation. Even includes a drunken master sensei chaperone and a loyal impenetrable cat you can wear as a shield, no NSFW here folks.

Gunbuster (1988)

Buckle up alien scum!
Gunbuster (1988)
After this, we'll only share time with one another.

A masterpiece in hard science mobile suit hand drawn animation. Five episode OVA dealing properly with time dilation and space travel, coming of age, and squashing those alien bugs! The actual hardest 10 seconds of animation ever drawn in the final battle.

Kite (1998)

If you could just, stay right there for a sec... great thanks
Kite (1998)
Are you ok? Of course not.

Lolita type assassin film legendary for its brutality, wild fight sequences, and art noir jazz backdrop of any seedy urban underbelly. NSFW: seriously.

Landlock (1995)

You messed with the wrong wind tribe.
Landlock (1995)
War is the worst and most essential thing

The Masamune Shirow one without the androids. An old bloodline discovers its true power granted by nature when opposing the machines of war.

Megazone 23 (1985)

Get on.
Megazone 23 (1985)
I'm sure those street punks could never comprehend what that means.

Three part epic: Part 1 has seriously the hardest meet-cute opening there is; excellent 80s pop diva device for hypnotic space travel plot. Yes, you read that right. Part 2: uh, same characters, look completely different from part 1, in fact whole animation style different; it still rocks and provides an excellent closure to part 1. Can humanity get it right this time? Part 3: there is one, but apparently wildly different.

Ninja Scroll (1995)

Jubei knows how to make an entrance.
Ninja Scroll (1995)
You are a fool to cling to life in a world where death is the rule.

Classic ninja epic following the incomparable swordsman, Jubei, as he cuts through a monstrous magically gifted band of ninjas to settle a score. NSFW: pretty intense violence and body horror throughout, sex and sexual assault.

Redline (2009)

How's my hair?
Redline (2009)
Why don't you quit watching and get behind the wheel like the rest of us!?

Not quite 80/90’s but worth making the list. An intergalactic race with an insane number of drawn frames, it’s like a hypnotic dream all the way through as our rockabilly protagonist races their way to glory.

Take The X Train (1987)

Tiger style.
Take The X Train (1987)
It was sort of like a 'Choo-choo-choo' followed by a 'zaaaaap' noise.

A short, bizarre, and macabre ride on a ghost train. Follow a humble civil servant in a lush 80’s Tokyo backdrop with jazz piano in your ear on one last train ride. NSFW: seriously disturbing body horror ending.

Vision of Escaflowne (1996)

Fighting is what we truly wanted afterall.
Vision of Escaflowne (1996)
Love is not a destiny. It is a choice we make every day.

Stop me if you heard about the one where a high school student is pulled away from their dull life and pulled into a fantasy world where they are all powerful and guests of honor to the ruling class. Oh yeah and the world is still reeling from some super-weapon I’m sure we all know not to try to use again… Slay a dragon, take its heart, power your mobile suit - wow. An excellent blend of fantasy and mecha worlds. A 24 episode series (there’s a film as well I need to get to) where our teenage tarot master protagonist finds herself transported to a world where fate is literally being toyed with by strange powers.
